Written by Logan Staats, Rob Lamothe, Suzie Miller and 250 collaborators from Six Nations of the Grand River, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Haldimand County, the journey to 'Song for the Water' began in April 2019. Or maybe it began years before when Logan and Rob met at the Six Nations Community Hall, introduced to each other by Jace Martin. Or maybe it's been waiting to be written since the glaciers carved out the space that Lake Erie fills now. You can never tell with songs.

Rob and Logan set out to write a song with young students, based on Indigenous peoples' understanding that we literally exist in relationship with rivers, lakes and oceans. The first step was to invite friend Suzie Miller (Indigenous Lead for the Grand Erie District School Board) to share her knowledge of treaties and her passion for water and peace, as she, Logan and Rob facilitated conversation circles for over 200 students at Thompson Creek, J. L. Mitchener, Emily C. General and Lloyd S. King Elementary Schools… and for the general public at the Dunnville Farmers Market.

Rob and Logan and then took all of the words and melodies, the ideas and the dreams they had gathered in conversation circles and poured them into a song. Bassist Justine Fischer and drummer Zander Lamothe helped record… and ‘We Are The Water’ was born.
